May Meeting Roundup
First off, thanks again to the Meetupery for hosting us this month.
We had a couple new faces — I hope they learned something! We started off with intros and learned about what everyone is working on. Ryan was working on a car-puter which peaked my interest quite a bit. Hopefully soon he’ll have something to show off and give a demo on! Doppler radar, say what!?
Darkwind kicked off the demos with some video footage he captured with his hacked together drone. Very cool and extremely cost effective. He captured some amazing footage of deer in his backyard. TIL that deer are memorized by a quadcopter flying 10 feet away from them. Klaiviel immediately was thinking how great it would be for hunting. I’d have to agree, although, It seems like not much of a challenge when you have an aerial view.
DW5304 gave us an old school ARP poisoning demo and explored more mass-SNMP scanning results of some home brew tools that basicdays, Vaerulf, and himself created. Impressive software leveraging zmap to quickly scan the entire internet for insecure SNMP daemons. 1.5 million of them if I remember correctly.
I recapped heartbleed for everyone and described how I was able to obtain RSA private keys using the exploit.
And finally Mike had a chemistry experiment with him to explore the relationship of pressure and boiling points of liquid. I was fascinated by this as I have never seen it done before. The discussions surrounding it was fantastic thanks in part to Steve. We got into all sorts of topics including vacuums and blackholes. Thanks again to Mike for expanding the areas of expertise.
Much of the time was spent in smaller groups discussing everything under the sun. I could feel the information flowing. Very cool stuff! Hope to see more new faces next month.
Congrats to Larry, Basicdays, and DW5304 for winning this month’s free junk giveaway!
Uh Oh! TLS/SSL Heartbeat Vulnerability Time
TLS heartbeat read overrun (CVE-2014-0160)
Test using our online tool to see if your server is affected
https://new.dc414.org/projects/ssl-heartbleed-cve-2014-0160-test/
A missing bounds check in the handling of the TLS heartbeat extension can be
used to reveal up to 64k of memory to a connected client or server.
Only 1.0.1 and 1.0.2-beta releases of OpenSSL are affected including
1.0.1f and 1.0.2-beta1.
Thanks for Neel Mehta of Google Security for discovering this bug and to
Adam Langley
preparing the fix.
Affected users should upgrade to OpenSSL 1.0.1g. Users unable to immediately
upgrade can alternatively recompile OpenSSL with -DOPENSSL_NO_HEARTBEATS.
1.0.2 will be fixed in 1.0.2-beta2.
April meeting — salted butter or not?
April brought another great meeting! Thanks again for the Milwaukee Makerspace for hosting us. Klaiviel taught us quite a few things about locks, he had his collection out for display.
We then toured the facility again, always a great time to explore the Makerspace! We were able to see this crazy subwoofer in action!
It’s a booth you sit inside and /FEEL THE G’s/ Here’s Vlad inside:
We had to tone it down after threats of the police being called for noise were voiced. 🙂
After that, we went back and saw a cool piece of machinery that Mike put together, cooling a computer and GPU with a dehumidifier!
We then spent the better part of the evening debating the merits of salted butter, vs unsalted butter. Seems Faraday really has a strong opinion about it! here’s this… equation that lays it all out for us:
All in all, another great meeting. See you next month at the Meetupery!

March meeting fun!
March came in, and was an awesome time. Too bad ngharo and vlad missed it. We were hopping at the Meetupery!
dw5304 got things started with some radio hacking, with his HackerRF board that he’s managed to un-brick. We swept some bands, and learned that car FOBs generally work around 300mhz for sending signals. And Chrysler FOBs have some good output!
After that, we had some fun with a giant lock that Klaviel tried his hand at. This thing is used for some serious security!
We also reminisced about previous dc414 meetings, like a certain laser incident, and RF jammers. W also got to see a neat piece of hackery, an ammo can turned into a self contained power supply, with lithium drill batteries and an inverter. Awesomesauce!
Thanks for everyone who came out, and we’ll see you again next month!

February meeting awesomeness and sadness
February was another great meeting. It started with me and ngharo running late then doing the introductions, which there was a lot of. Its always good to see new faces at meetings. Then I broke the sad news that I will be leaving Wisconsin and so dc414 as well, appointed ngharo as new prez and stepped down. Then ngharo said a few words and gave us a glimpse of some of the changes he will be making. Everyone be sure to congratulate ngharo, I can’t wait to see what he does with the place.
Rob started the demos off with hacking a used disposable flash camera and a halogen light bulb to make a handy improvised flash light. I perfect zombie apocalypse type hack. Then he busted out materials for everyone to make their own zombie caution light. It did’t take long for people to start hacking it up even more and did all kinds of crazy things. Vlad was the first to turn things up to 10 by doing something to the transformer in the camera to pump out more voltage and get a brighter light. Then dw5304 and others did their best to blow the capacitors and other things up! Then using the flash bulb that came with the camera and capacitors over 9000 we tried to do some UV tattooing. Next up was Klaiviel doing a key impressioning demo for the newbies in the crowd. Here are some photos of the meeting.
So here it is, my last post on dc414. It has been a fun ride and I will miss everyone. You can still find me on the dc414 irc chan and I will be at meetings via G+ or what ever ngharo sets up for the group. See you out there.

Openings at dc414!
Running dc414 is a big job and we need help! We have a few openings in the ranks if anyone is up to the challenge. There is no pay but there is a few perks.
Current openings:
Web Master. – This person is responsible for all things website. Making posts, replying to people that comment on posts and notify the rest of the crew of things that pop up that requires their attention. We also want to move away from our current CMS to something else and you will be in charge of most of that transfer.
Graphics ninja. – Many parts of dc414 could use a good face lift and this person will be responsible for that, as well as many other projects.
Tech monkey. – Someone that holds, maintains and sets up all dc414 donated hardware at events.
Booty keeper. – Someone to collect and manage donations.
If you think you have what it takes to fill these spots please let me know, anarchy at dc414 dot org
